Background
American middleweight fighting out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, and a two-time UFC middleweight champion. He is known for an extremely high-volume, defensively rigid boxing style built on the Philly shell.
Career timeline
- Won the UFC middleweight title from Israel Adesanya in September 2023, then lost it to Dricus du Plessis by split decision in January 2024.
- Lost a rematch with Du Plessis in February 2025.
- Reclaimed the middleweight championship at UFC 328 on 9 May 2026, beating the previously undefeated Khamzat Chimaev by split decision (48-47, 48-47, 47-48) at the Prudential Center in Newark, despite entering as better than a 4-1 underdog.
- Has been dealing with a shoulder injury since; his first defence has been pushed toward the end of 2026 or into 2027, with a Chimaev rematch or a bout with Nassourdine Imavov the likely options.
Fight craft
Strickland fights behind a near-constant jab from a high, tight guard, walking forward, absorbing little and scoring steadily. It is not spectacular — he finishes rarely — but it is one of the hardest styles in the division to solve, because he does not over-commit and does not tire. Against Chimaev he added something the record did not predict: defensive wrestling good enough to survive nine takedowns and keep working from bad positions. His limitations are equally consistent: low knockout power, little offensive grappling, and a tendency to lose narrow decisions to fighters who can out-athlete him.
