Background

Russian bantamweight from Dudinka, training with Tiger Muay Thai. He is the reigning UFC bantamweight champion and the third fighter to hold the title twice, with a professional record of 20-5.

Career timeline

• Won the vacant UFC bantamweight title in July 2020, lost it by disqualification to Aljamain Sterling in March 2021, and won an interim title later that year.
• Went through a difficult stretch of narrow losses before rebuilding through 2024 and 2025.
• Reclaimed the undisputed bantamweight championship at UFC 323 on 6 December 2025, beating Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) and ending one of the longest winning streaks in the sport.
• Underwent lower back surgery in 2026, which has delayed a trilogy bout with Dvalishvili. No defence has been booked as of 1 August 2026.

Fight craft

Yan is among the most technically complete boxers in MMA: a tight guard, excellent body work, and combinations built in layers rather than single shots. What made the Dvalishvili win possible was defensive wrestling — he denied the overwhelming majority of the challenger’s takedown attempts and forced a kickboxing match he was always going to win. His historic weakness has been pacing: several of his losses came from banking early rounds too conservatively and running out of fight.
