Background

American strawweight of Brazilian descent, an IBJJF world champion and ADCC medallist widely regarded as one of the best pure grapplers in women’s MMA. She is the reigning UFC women’s strawweight champion with a professional record of 16-5.

• Won world titles in Brazilian jiu-jitsu before turning to MMA and joining the UFC in 2018.
• Won the vacant UFC women’s strawweight championship at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi on 25 October 2025, beating Virna Jandiroba by unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47) across five rounds. The belt was vacant because Zhang Weili had moved up to flyweight.

Dern’s jiu-jitsu is genuinely world class — she attacks submissions from guard as readily as from top position, and her armbar and back-take finishes have ended most of her best wins. The Jandiroba fight was notable because she won it as a striker and a decision fighter rather than a grappler, against a fellow black belt who would not give her the mat. Her boxing has improved markedly, though power and takedown entries remain the weakest links in the chain.
