Fighter Profile: Kayla Harrison

Kayla Harrison: UFC women's bantamweight champion — Olympic judo pedigree and 2026 injury.

Background

American bantamweight and a two-time Olympic judo gold medallist (London 2012, Rio 2016), previously a two-time PFL lightweight tournament champion. She is the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion with a record of 19-1.

Career timeline

  • Won Olympic judo gold in 2012 and 2016 before turning to MMA and dominating the PFL’s women’s lightweight division.
  • Joined the UFC in 2024 and moved down to bantamweight.
  • Won the UFC women’s bantamweight championship at UFC 316 on 7 June 2025, submitting Julianna Peña with a kimura at 4:55 of round two.
  • A title defence against Amanda Nunes was booked for UFC 324 on 24 January 2026 but was postponed after Harrison required surgery on herniated discs in her neck weeks before the fight.
  • Returned to training by March 2026 and was reported in late April 2026 to be preparing for a rescheduled Nunes bout.

Fight craft

Harrison’s judo is the foundation of everything: elite grip fighting, throws that most MMA fighters have no defensive framework for, and heavy top pressure once the fight is on the mat. She is also physically stronger than most opponents at 135lb. The open questions are the ones a judo base does not answer — her striking is workmanlike rather than dangerous, and the weight cut to bantamweight has been a recurring subject of discussion.

In the modern MMA landscape

Our wider MMA analysis says the proposed Nunes megafight “was unfortunately cancelled”. It was postponed, not cancelled: Harrison withdrew after neck surgery, and the UFC has been working to rebook the fight later in 2026. She remains champion throughout.
