Background
American lightweight from Safford, Arizona, a former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at Northern Colorado. He is the reigning UFC lightweight champion, with a professional record of 28-5 and 21 knockouts.
Career timeline
- Won the World Series of Fighting lightweight title before joining the UFC in 2017.
- Won the interim UFC lightweight title in May 2020, losing the unification bout to Khabib Nurmagomedov; also lost a title challenge to Charles Oliveira in 2022.
- Won the interim lightweight title a second time at UFC 324 on 24 January 2026, beating Paddy Pimblett by unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46).
- Unified the championship at UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House on 14 June 2026, stopping Ilia Topuria by corner stoppage at the end of round four.
- Aged 37 at the time — he was born on 14 November 1988 — he is widely reported as the oldest fighter to win the UFC lightweight title. No defence has been announced.
Fight craft
Gaethje fights at a pace and risk level nobody else in the division sustains: leg kicks that visibly change opponents’ mobility inside two rounds, and a willingness to trade in the pocket that has produced more Fight of the Night contests than almost any active fighter. Against Topuria he used exactly that durability, absorbing a dangerous second round before turning the fight in the later stages. It is also the obvious limitation — his defensive approach relies on being tougher than the other man, and the knockouts on his record all came when that assumption failed.
In the modern MMA landscape
Our wider MMA analysis has the Topuria result right but skips a step: Gaethje first won an interim title by beating Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 in January 2026, and the White House bout was a unification. Two figures in that report could not be corroborated and have been left out here — an age of “37 years and 71 days” (his birth date makes him roughly 37 years and seven months on fight night) and a count of 17 UFC post-fight bonuses.
