Background

Burmese flyweight who arrived in the United States as a refugee from Myanmar and fights out of Houston, Texas. Born on 10 October 2001, he is the reigning UFC flyweight champion with a professional record of 17-2, and was the second-youngest champion in UFC history when he won the belt.

Career timeline

• Joined the UFC in 2023 and won nine of his first ten promotional bouts on the back of an exceptionally high striking output.
• Won the UFC flyweight championship at UFC 323 on 6 December 2025, when Alexandre Pantoja was injured 26 seconds into round one — Pantoja hurt his arm falling to the canvas after Van caught a head-kick attempt — giving Van a TKO win by injury.
• Made his first defence at UFC 328 on 9 May 2026, stopping Tatsuro Taira by TKO with punches at 1:32 of the fifth round after a five-round war.
• A rematch with Pantoja has been widely discussed as the natural next fight.

Fight craft

Van’s method is volume: he throws more strikes per minute than almost anyone in the UFC, keeps a punishing pace across all five rounds, and simply overwhelms opponents who cannot match his output. The Taira defence was the proof — his challenger attempted takedown after takedown to slow him down and could not, and the finish came in the championship round. The risk in the style is obvious: he stays in range constantly, and against a heavier hitter the same exchanges that win him rounds could end a fight.
