Fighter Profile: Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor: former two-division UFC champion — record, suspension, comeback and injury.

Background

Irish fighter from Dublin, the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history and the sport’s biggest commercial draw. His professional record is 22-7.

Career timeline

  • Won the UFC featherweight title in December 2015 and the lightweight title in November 2016, becoming the first fighter to hold two UFC belts at once.
  • Suffered a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021 and did not compete again for five years.
  • Accepted an 18-month suspension under the UFC anti-doping policy for three whereabouts failures in 2024 (13 June, 19 September and 20 September). The standard 24-month sanction was reduced by six months, and the ban ran retroactively from September 2024 to 20 March 2026.
  • Returned at UFC 329 on 11 July 2026 against Max Holloway at 170lb. He injured his right knee on a leaping kick in the opening seconds and lost by TKO at 1:09 of round one.
  • Confirmed afterwards that he had torn his right ACL and meniscus, with surgery to follow and a stated intention to fight again.

Fight craft

At his peak McGregor’s left hand was the most feared counter in the sport, set up by a long, side-on stance, precise distance control and an ability to make opponents lead. He was also a far better front-foot pressure fighter than the highlight reels suggest. What the last decade has shown is how much of that depended on physical availability: two catastrophic leg injuries five years apart have now bookended his career, and he has not won a fight since 2020.

In the modern MMA landscape

Our wider MMA analysis uses UFC 329 to argue that nostalgia currently out-earns meritocratic matchmaking, and the doping-table entry for McGregor is accurate. The point stands and is if anything sharper now: the event generated a record gate, and the sporting return was 69 seconds and a torn ACL.
